Ag and Farmland Protection board to review parcels next week

The Jefferson County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday to discuss 12 applications from property owners who want their land included in one of the county’s three agricultural districts.

The 12 applications received in June represent 20 parcels. At least 51 percent of each parcel must either be actively farmed or highly suitable for agricultural purposes to be eligible for inclusion in a district.

E. Hartley Bonisteel, the Planning Department official managing the program, and Jay M. Matteson, Jefferson County agricultural coordinator, have reviewed the parcels to make sure they meet the program requirements and will present their findings at the board meeting.

This year, all applications except for one came from the northern portion of the county and were concerned with newer farms, according to Ms. Bonisteel.
