While the American Red Cross of Northern New York did not meet its Heroes Campaign fundraising goal, north country residents have been busy donating to local and out-of-county disaster relief services.

Chapter Executive Jane G. Gendron said that, while the Heroes Campaign raised $2,000 of the $10,000 goal, much of that has been sent to the Mohawk Valley to assist with relief efforts after late June flooding.

“Our operation in the Mohawk Valley is ongoing,” she said. “It could be between $300,000 and $700,000; we just don’t know what our cost is.”

Many people, she said, have donated specifically to help residents of Oneida and Herkimer counties since the June 28 and 29 storms left many households and businesses there inundated with water.

At the same time, people also are contributing money toward help with future local disaster relief services.

Mrs. Gendron said a majority of local disasters are house fires, but assistance is provided for disaster relief during major power outages and floods, among other issues.

Any donation will help the agency, she said, including a $10 or $100 bill. One person dropped off $2, which was all he could afford, she said.

“It all adds up,” Mrs. Gendron said. “People are caring in the north country.”

The Heroes Campaign was conducted for the first time this year, from March to June. Mrs. Gendron said she hopes more residents of Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties will become familiar with the campaign next year. Money raised from that campaign goes toward all programs and services the Red Cross offers locally.

Donations are always appreciated, she said, and may be dropped off as cash or check to the agency’s office. Donors who would like their money to go toward a specific program or purpose can designate that on the check’s memo line. Checks also may be mailed to American Red Cross of Northern New York, 203 N. Hamilton St., Watertown, N.Y. 13601.
