Grand Prix racers rock at Michigan Regatta

The 14th annual Quake on the Lake returned to Pontiac Lake at Waterford Mich. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday highlighted by the Grand Prix class where the best of the Northeast and Northwest matched up.

The local Grand Prix contingent enjoyed a rocking weekend headlined by the GP 777 “Steeler” driven by Bert Henderson of Brockville, Ont. The “Steeler” crew is composed of Ogdensburg’s Jeff Richards and Joe Morley, Huey Newport of Cincinatti, Ohio and Canadian mechanic Mike Gremlin.

“Steeler” caught fire at Valleyfield the weekend before and the crews of the GP 777 and “Bad Influence”, which is driven by Ogdensburg’s Joe Sovie, combined to complete extensive repairs just before racing began on Pontiac Lake. “Steeler” and Henderson went out and dominated the Grand Prix action and set a One Mile course record averaging 112 mph.

“It was just a great week. We assisted the Steeler crew with the repairs the boat went out and just shattered the course record,” said Sovie.

Sovie also enjoyed a great weekend on the water racing in two classes. He pilotted the GP 79 “Bad Influence” to an overall third place in the Grand Prix class. The boat is owned by Mike Grindell and sponsored by Environmental Manufacturing Solutions of Melbourne, Fla.

Sovie also drove the A23 “Geezer Boat” to overall honors in the 2.5 Modified Class and came with 1.4 seconds of a world speed record averaging 94.5 mph.

“Everything went so well on the weekend. Everything we drove did very well,” said Sovie who cited the efforts of his crew which included his parents Bob and Rose Sovie, his wife Val, Dave and Debbie Binion, Tom Palmer and a special guest appearance Chic LaRose of Florida.

The “Geezer Boat” is owned by Debbie Welte of Hebrin, Ky.
