More than 350 attend county senior picnic

To St. Lawrence County Seniors:

Thank you for making our annual St. Lawrence County Picnic for Seniors such a success.

The picnic sponsored by the Office of the Aging and St. Lawrence County Council of Senior Citizens was held at Madrid Community Center and Pavillion on July 12, 2013.

Over 350 seniors were in attendance where they enjoyed a day of free bingo, raffles, games and music by Leon & Friends, band provided by the Senior Clubs of St. Lawrence County.

Lunch prepared by the Office for the Aging nutrition centers and the Marine Corps League of Madrid grilled hamburgers and hot dogs was served by volunteers (local county candidates for election) and NY State Senate officials. The Madrid Rescue Squad was on stand-by if needed. Thnak you to the Madrid Fire Department for helping in set-up and clean-up.

Thank you volunteers Gordon and Betty, along with several other,s who had their antique cars on display, which brought back memories for many. Special contests and games, spinning demos, Maple syrup samples were shared with all attending. Other organizations shared info with us.

Rose Randavier was the winner of our 50/50 raffle.

Free door prizes drawn were donated by the following businesses and organizations:

Coke Cola Company, Malone, Community Bank, NBT Bank, Country Organics, Rte 310, Chris’s Hair Shop, Madrid,Waddington Blooms, Seaway Diner & Smokehouse (formly Stoner’s), Artworks Creperie, Ole Smokehouse, Madrid, Caring Touch Massage, Green’s Wines, Murray’s Resturant, Waddington and the St. Lawrence County Council Senior Clubs.

Special thanks go to the members of St. Lawrence County Council who worked the Bingo, Raffles, Registration, Door Prizes, Water and Soda, T -Shirt sales - Barb, Walt, Howard, Dot, Shirley, Laura, Father Jack, Dan, Marcia, Bernadette, Jim, Elly, Lorraine, Marion, Chris, Stella. You are all equally important to the success of our picnic along with the members of the Madrid Marine Corps League Detachment 408; Nancy Robert, director of St. Lawrence County Office for the Aging; Diane of the Nutrition Centers and their staff of volunteers including Stacy, Christine, Barb and any others I may have missed.

Tents were provided by Soil and Water of St. Lawrence County and Waddington True Value. Our seniors were especially grateful for the golf carts and drivers provided by Leberge & Curtiss of Canton that were on site all day to provide rides for anyone that needed them.

The end of the perfect day of picnic, music and beautiful weather was the Ding-a-ling ice cream truck was available at site for anyone to purchase their favorite treat.

Special thanks to co-chair Phyliss Brock, who personally collected donations of the free door prizes and helped our council in any way she could.
