Basketball camp wraps up at Trinity Catholic School

MASSENA - The Trinity Catholic School gymnasium was packed Friday with eager youth looking forward to games and activities and the conclusion of an exciting week on the hardwood.

Eric Pomainville teaches sixth grade at the school, and he ran a basketball camp for students in grades one through six all week, with the first, second and third graders playing in the morning and the older students polishing their skill set in the afternoon.

Mr. Pomainville had a busy day on the courts, running the camp for two separate three-hour sessions.

“In the morning with the little kids we ran a little mini practice with ball skills, ball handling, and shooting. Then we did games and then we did three-on-three and then we had a daily contest at the end of the day to finish,” Mr. Pomainville said.

Fourteen youngsters attended the morning session, and 22 were there in the afternoon.

Mr. Pomainville was responsible for bringing the basketball program to the school this year and was the coach for the team.

“We started a basketball program this year at Trinity, and I was the coach. This was our first season, and this is our first basketball camp. We’re trying to build a program and get things going in the right direction,” he said. “It gets pretty busy when the school year starts. Our season starts in November. We practice on Wednesdays and Saturdays, then you got games every so often and a couple tournaments that we do.”

Friday also included the presentation of a new basketball rim by the Massena Basketball Association (MBA) that will be put up on the outdoor courts in the coming weeks.

“The MBA decided to replace the rim that’s out here on the playground to give us a better rim to shoot at. It’s also for local kids in the community. They come down in the evenings or in the mornings to shoot around, and we’re just keeping basketball rolling in Massena,” Mr. Pomainville said.

“I just took over as commissioner from Tim Currier. One of his last things he wanted done was a few donations and this was one of them. So we just ordered it and we donated it. Basically it was Tim Currier who wanted it, and he gave me the idea so we were happy to do it,” MBA Commissioner Shane Cameron said. “This is one of the few outdoor basketball hoops around that kids can actually use. The elementary schools like Nightingale they don’t have it anymore. Neither does the high school or the junior high so this is one of the few that we actually have between here and maybe the New Testament has an outdoor facility too. But yeah we don’t have a lot anymore.”

Two students who attended the afternoon clinics were Julia Blair, 13,and Ethan Miller, 11. Both enjoyed the camp, whether it be the games or getting better at a particular skill.

“I liked playing the different games. Also, a lot of my friends are here,” Ms. Blair said.

“I had (Mr. Pomainville) as a teacher last year. I’ve liked the games we’ve done and getting better too. I want to get better at shooting,” Mr. Miller added.

Also helping out Mr. Pomainville was the school librarian Candace O’Neill. Ms. O’Neill was particularly impressed with the children’s abilities to pick up the new information that they were given on the sport.

“It’s amazing to watch them. Just this week the little ones, how much they learned in a week. The progress that they made was phenomenal. It really gets you excited for what’s going to be coming down the road,” she said.
