A Watertown man was sentenced Friday in Jefferson County Court to a year in the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building for trying to have sexual contact with a 16-year-old girl in January.

Paul J. Avallone, 55, whose last known address was 636 Bronson St., was sentenced to the jail term after a May 28 guilty plea to third-degree attempted criminal sex act. He also was sentenced to five years’ probation as a result of a guilty plea the same day to failure to register as a sex offender.

He admitted that in January, he failed to notify law enforcement officials, as he was required to do under the Sex Offender Registry Act, that he had set up an account on a social media website. He also admitted that on Jan. 10, he tried to have sexual intercourse with a 16-year-old female by setting up a meeting with her at Salmon Run Mall through the website. He will be required to register with the state as a Level 3 sex offender.

Robert J. Taylor Jr., 30, Watertown, was sentenced to an unspecified amount of time served at the PSB and five years’ probation after a May 14 guilty plea to third-degree criminal possession of weapon. He admitted that on March 25, he possessed a loaded unregistered handgun, which he was forbidden to have because he had been previously convicted of a crime. He also admitted violating probation by committing the new crime. He was serving three years’ probation imposed in August 2011 for a third-degree assault conviction. Resentencing on the probation violation was deferred until Aug. 6. His probation supervision is expected to be transferred to South Carolina, where he plans to relocate.

Elizabeth G. Skinner, 45, whose last known address was 26138 Jewett Place, Calcium, pleaded guilty to third-degree attempted criminal sale of a controlled substance. She admitted that she tried to sell cocaine Feb. 13 within the county. She is expected to be sentenced Sept. 23 to six months in the PSB and five years’ probation.
