POTSDAM - The SUNY Potsdam Julia E. Crane Alumni Association recently honored Melinde (Mindy) Mospaw Poupore, a member of the Class of 1979, with the 2013 Helen M. Hosmer Excellence in Music Teaching Award, at the college’s annual Reunion Weekend.

The Helen M. Hosmer Excellence in Music Teaching Award is presented each year to an alumnus or alumna in public school music education who has demonstrated exemplary service in any of the areas of choral, instrumental or general music education.

Poupore was honored for her career as a consummate musician, teacher, performer and educator.

A native of Clarence, Poupore received her Bachelor of Music degree in music education and later earned her Master of Music degree in clarinet performance from SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music, where she studied clarinet with Dr. Alan Woy.

Poupore just completed her 34th and final year with the Malone Central School District, where she taught band at every level and had served as the high school band director and co-coordinator of music for Franklin Academy since 2001. Under her direction, the middle school and high school bands have both received NYSSMA gold citations for the past 23 years.

Professor Anthony Maiello, Poupore’s mentor while she was a Crane student, described her as “a bright shining star in the music education profession.”

In her distinguished career, Poupore has built her reputation as a positive, hard-working, cooperative and charismatic music educator. In keeping with the long tradition of Crane graduates, she is an accomplished conductor, performer and music educator. She plays clarinet with the Northern Symphonic Winds and has been a generous host to Crane faculty members, whom she invites to play as guest artists with her ensembles. In addition, Poupore has sent many highly qualified high school grades to Crane.

Poupore has been a fantastic contributor to the music education profession, having served the New York State School Music Association as an adjudicator, guest conductor and state chairperson for bands. She has been a chaperone at the NYSSMA Conference All-State for 25 years. From 2009 to 2011, Poupore served as president of the New York State Band Directors Association, and was later awarded the NYSBDA Distinguished Service Award in 2013. She continues to serve NYSBDA as immediate past president.
