A bogus float stunt with an alleged racist overtone was prevented Saturday from slipping into the lineup of the annual Seaway Festival parade in Ogdensburg.
Ogdensburg City Police were called Saturday at 11:27 a.m. to Proctor Avenue after an unidentified Canadian motorist called to report subjects on a float swearing and yelling racial slurs at him.
Police officers who investigated the incident were unavailable Monday to comment on the racial slur allegation.
But festival chairman Chris S. Cole said that a pickup truck hauling a flatbed trailer with a sheet and its spray-painted message, The Worlds Worst Float, attempted to enter the Ford Street parade route from Proctor Avenue.
He said police managed to put a stop to this latest occurrence of an occasional Seaway Festival parade annoyance: unregistered, renegade floats who try to slip in among legitimate parade participants.
Theyre always trying to do something, Mr. Cole said. Its happened before and weve taken care of it.
Mr. Cole said he was unaware of the racial slur allegation.
