Hammond School board to strike a deal with McQueer

HAMMOND — The Board of Education will meet today to discuss a settlement agreement with Superintendent Douglas H. McQueer.

Board President Timothy W. Pitcher said he could not comment Tuesday about the meeting because board members will discuss personnel matters in executive session.

“Our lawyers are in talks and someone will prepare a statement after the executive session,” he said. “Hopefully after Wednesday, an agreement will be reached.”

Mr. McQueer’s contract was set to expire at the end of July.

Mr. McQueer was reappointed at the July 9 board meeting, but after a 15-minute executive session, board members voted not to renew his contract. The president and vice president of the board fired Mr. McQueer the next day.

During the board’s last meeting, after residents criticized the board’s actions, Mr. Pitcher said the contract between Mr. McQueer and the school board was “open” and the board would reconsider his contract renewal.

The board has since decided to stand firm on its July 9 vote.

“Right now, we’re focused on getting the agreement done,” Mr. Pitcher said. “The whole body is in agreement with the situation. No one has stepped aside yet.”

Mr. McQueer said he could not comment on the terms of the settlement, but more than likely he will serve until Oct. 1, when the board is expected to find his replacement.

Mr. Pitcher said he could not discuss the reason why the board elected not to renew Mr. McQueer’s contract. Previously he said the firing was due to an “ongoing issue of job performance,” poor evaluation scores and the board’s desire to move in a new direction.

Mr. McQueer has served the district as superintendent for seven years and as a math teacher for 11 years.

The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the school library.
