Syracuse University and BOCES partner for program

The Jefferson-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services has partnered with Syracuse University for a fourth year to give students seminars on financial aid and the college search, in addition to the high school presentations and college visits during the school year — for free — to be taken advantage of.

During Wednesday’s seminar at Jefferson Community College, students received tips on completing the Common Application — an application that can be submitted to more than 400 colleges — and how to apply for scholarships and why going to college is so important.

“College is going to be a great experience,” said Jefferson-Lewis BOCES Superintendent Jack J. Boak Jr. “It’ll be the best investment you’ve ever made.”

Seventeen-year-old Alexis M. Higgins, who will be a senior at Thousand Islands Central School in the fall, found out about the seminar through a letter she received in the mail. She plans to apply to Keuka College and Jefferson Community College.

“I learned a lot about the financial aid process,” she said.

Syracuse University Director of Student Support Service Robert C. Wilson said financial aid is one of the more daunting parts of applying for college.

“It’s really helpful for students to know they can get some sort of financial aid,” he said.

Mr. Wilson said most schools in Jefferson and Lewis counties are involved in the program.
