Timothy J. Farrell of Ogdensburg has been appointed acting director of the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center.
He replaces Executive Director Samuel A. Bastien, who left last month to serve as CEO of Four Winds Hospital, Saratoga, a private psychiatric hospital.
Mr. Bastien announced his intention to retire in May, and had agreed to stay in his position until mid to late July. State Office of Mental Health spokesman Benjamin Rosen had said that OMH would wait until Mr. Bastiens position was vacant to convene a search committee to find a permanent replacement.
Mr. Farrell has worked for the psychiatric center since 1983, first working as a nurse and nurse administrator. He served as director of nursing from 1999 until 2009. He has since served as chief of adult inpatient and outpatient services.
I am honored and excited to have the opportunity to lead St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center into the future, Mr. Farrell said in a prepared statement submitted by Mr. Rosen.My career path has allowed me to advocate for person-centered-care and recovery. In this new role I will have the opportunity to lead St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center in establishing the future of community mental health and behavioral health care systems in Northern New York.
According to information supplied by Mr. Rosen, Mr. Farrell is a registered nurse who received an associates degree from SUNY Canton in 1983. He received a bachelors degree in nursing from SUNY IT, Utica, in 1990, and a bachelors degree in nursing administration from SUNY IT in 2000.
Mr. Farrell is also an Ogdensburg Free Academy girls softball coach, serves on the supervisory committee of the St. Lawrence Federal Credit Union, serves on the SUNY Canton Nursing Advisory Board and is an adjunct instructor at SUNY Cantons School of Science, Health and Criminal Justice.
