WADDINGTON - A roadside vegetable stand was stolen from a front yard in Waddington Wednesday night, and the owner hopes to have it returned.
There will be no questions asked if they return it, Shirley G. Belgarde said.
The three-by-five-foot, chestnut wood stand was stolen from the lawn of 132 Lincoln Ave. in the center of the village late Wednesday or early Thursday.
Mrs. Belgarde said she uses the stand to sell vegetables and fruit she grows at her farm.
It was an everyday thing; we do it all summer long, she said. We have a lot of customers.
Each night the stand would be cleared of any remaining produce and left out.
Weve done it for four years without incident, Mrs. Belgarde said.
But on Thursday morning Mrs. Belgarde realized the stand was gone.
Its quite a large stand, she said. It would take probably two people to take it.
Mrs. Belgarde said she built the stand herself, for roughly $75.
It was a nice stand, she said. Its very important to me.
State police, who are investigating the incident, said the crime was likely an act of vandalism or carried out by a competitor.
Im going to have to build another one, Mrs. Belgarde said. This time Im chaining it to a tree.
