BRASHER FALLS — An event that began 13 years ago to coincide with the 175th anniversary of the town of Brasher kicks off again today.

The 2013 Tri-Town Summer Festival features three days of activities geared to people of all ages, according to Jodi White, who co-chairs the event this year with Katie Seidel.

“They’re activities that people expect year after year. People ask for them. They know what to expect,” she said.

Today’s activities include a sidewalk art contest; pre-teen/teen golf tournament; Story in the Park and Lions Club Picnic; senior ice cream social; roast pork and beef dinner; “Minute to Win It”; class reunions for the classes of 1993, 1983 and 1973; live music; free ice cream; the naming of parade marshals; and fireworks.

Marshals were named starting in 2010, and they are in the first position in Saturday’s parade behind the American Legion, which always leads off in honor of the men and women serving in the armed forces. Last year’s marshals were Randy J. Hilbig for the town of Brasher, Charmaine McLaughlin for the town of Lawrence and William Ramsdell for the town of Stockholm.

Ms. White said the fireworks at St. Lawrence Central School’s bus garage are always popular, as is the parade that begins at 11 a.m. Saturday.

In addition to the parade, Saturday activities include a 5K walk/run; “Getting It Done Obstacle Challenge”; class of 1973 golf outing; pine car race; co-ed beach volleyball; eating contest; blindfold bicycle rally; wine tasting; live music; class of 1993, 1983 and 1973 reunion dinners; frog jumping contest; Carnival of Fun; steak dinner; Tri-Town Minor Hockey duck/turtle race; and Cory Jock Home Run Derby.

The weekend wraps up Sunday with a breakfast; fishing derby; class of 1973 picnic; St. Lawrence Central alumni lacrosse game; chicken barbecue; and lawn mower races.

Youngsters can enjoy the activities at the Carnival of Fun.

“This year I believe we have two bouncy houses coming for the kids and carnival games,” Ms. White said.

Ms. White advised early attendance at the steak dinner at the fire station.

“If you don’t get there very early, you might not get your steak that night,” she said.

The “Minute to Win It” game is something new this year.

“We always do on Friday night some kind of obstacle course or scavenger hunt,” Ms. White said. “They comes in teams of two and have 10 things they have to get through.”

The Cory Jock Home Run Derby was moved from Friday to Saturday at the Tri-Town Community Center, and it always draws a large crowd, Ms. White said.

“That’s another thing they look forward to,” she said.

Ms. White said a small but dedicated group begins meeting in March to plan the year’s activities.

“We have a small group of people and would love for it to be bigger,” she said.

It sends out letters to the town of Brasher, Lawrence and Stockholm, which all support the event financially, and tries to incorporate activities in those locations.

Now that the planning is done and the event is underway, there’s only one thing left to do: hope for good weather.

“We’re hoping the rain stays away,” Ms. White said.
