Joyce A. Phillips


Joyce Ann Phillips, 71, Broadway Ave. W., Watertown, passed away August 1st at the Hospice Residence at the Ellis Farm, Gotham St., surrounded by her family, where she had been a resident since July 25th.

The memorial service will be 12:00pm August 6 at the Asbury United Methodist Church with Rev. Leon VanWie, pastor, officiating. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be held in Salem, W. Virginia for the convenience of the family. Funeral arrangements are with the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home.

Joyce was born March 29, 1942 in Clarksburg, W. Va., a daughter to Robert Greer and Irene Bee Greer. She graduated from Salem, W.Va. high School in 1960 and received her Associates Degree from Salem College. Joyce worked for the US Government as an administrative assistant for over 20 years. She retired as Executive Secretary for the Director of the Fingerprint Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Bridgeport, W. Va.

Joyce married Ora R. Phillips in 1961.

She was a member of Asbury UMC, serving on the church’s worship and nomination committees, PSPRC, and was a volunteer with Hospice of Jefferson County and the Samaritan Medical Center. Joyce enjoyed and loved her grandchildren. She was an avid West Virginia Mountaineer football and basketball college sports fan.

Joyce is survived by her husband, Ora R. Phillips USAF, SMSgt, Ret. Two daughters and sons-in-law, Kelley and Ret. Maj. Chris Hague, USAF, and Erin and Ret. TSgt Thomas King, all of Watertown. Two sons and a daughter-in-law Derek S. Phillips, Rome, NY and Scott and Erin Phillips, Syracuse. Her grandchildren Katie, Leanne, Christopher, Natalia, Karyn, Thomas, Elyse, Jacob, Abigayle, Shannon, and Eli; three great grandchildren, Kylee, Connor and Olivia.

Her mother Irene Greer, Salem W.Va.. Her brother and sister-in-law Michael and Marjorie Greer, Bridgeport, W.Va. Her sister Janice (James, dec.) DeWind, Lyons, NY Nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Asbury UMC, 327 Franklin St.or to Hospice of Jefferson County, 1398 Gotham St., both in Watertown, NY 13601.
