LBSH Housing residents enjoy TV-themed ice cream social

BRASHER FALLS - Ice cream and television were a big hit Friday at LBSH Housing.

An ice cream social was held in the housing complex’s dining room as part of the Tri-Town Summer Festival, which has a theme this year of “TV Land - Our Favorite Shows.”

For Friday’s social, themes from popular television shows of years gone by like Green Acres, Hawaii 5-0 and Sanford and Son played as the residents sat at TV-themed tables enjoying ice cream that had been delivered to them by volunteers.

Their tables included bags of popcorn, bowls of pretzels, a “Family Affair” game in which they had to match the fictional television kid to the correct show, and a menu so they could place their order. Their choices included a bowl of vanilla or chocolate ice cream, banana split or root beer float, and they could be dressed up with chocolate, caramel, strawberries and whipped cream.

After they made their choice, one of the volunteer servers would take up to the front table to fill the order, then deliver it back to them.

“They fill it out and the kids go get it,” said Sue Stubbs, one of the organizers.

The servers were a busy group this year, with other volunteers participating in separate activities being held around the Tri-Town area, such as a pre-teen/teen golf tournament at the Meadowbrook Golf Course and Stories in the Park and Lion’s Club picnic at the Tri-Town Community Center.

“We call up and find them. We’re lacking this year. We try to have 10 kids,” Ms. Stubbs said.

Among them was Celeste Gardner, 9, who worked her way through her designated tables with ease.

“My stepmom asked us” to participate, she said.

Two St. Lawrence Central High School seniors were also on hand to help out.

“My mother asked me if I wanted to do it,” said Christine LaShomb, whose grandfather is a resident at the housing complex.

Joining her was fellow student Adam Dishaw, who said he stepped up to help Ms. LaShomb and the others after they volunteered to assist.

As a special treat, St. Lawrence Central graduate Dan Frohm and high school senior Kelsey Newtown sang for the residents Friday afternoon.

Donations helped make the ice cream social a reality, according to Ms. Stubbs.

“LBSH is very good about giving us money. Stewart’s donates ice cream. We get wonderful help from the community,” she said.

As the residents spooned away at their ice cream, Ms. Stubbs invited them to ask for more.

“We have plenty of ice cream, so if you would like seconds or thirds just grab one of the kids,” she told them.

They were also invited to come up to an “Elephant Junk” table - named in recognition of the Sanford and Son television show - and pick up some gifts. Each dining room table had a TV-themed napkin named after a particular show and, as Ms. Stubbs called out of the name of the television show, those at that table were invited to choose their gift.

Among the eclectic assortment of goodies on the table were cookbooks, wreaths, jugs of maple syrup, dog treats, a golf bag coin bank, a birdhouse and puzzles.

“On Sanford and Son, he ran a junk yard. This our elegant junk,” she said.

Ms. Stubbs said they always remember the older adults with the ice cream social as part of the Tri-Town Summer Festival, which began Friday and runs until Sunday.

“The Tri-Town Festival is really for the kids. Sometimes we feel like there’s not enough for the seniors,” she said.
