Land cleared, ground broken for JCC dorms

The foundation for the Jefferson Community College residence hall already is being filled in.

The construction is running on schedule for the $17.5 million, 298-unit dormitory project, according to the Faculty Student Association president.

“They are working on the foundation, currently,” FSA President Jack N. Donato said. “That will happen over the course of a few weeks.”

The FSA is a nonprofit affiliated with the college and took care of the financing for the new building.

“We can’t use taxpayer dollars and we can’t use college dollars,” Mr. Donato said.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held two months behind schedule in mid-June. Throughout July, trees were cleared and 98,000 square feet of ground was overturned across from campus.

Mr. Donato said the two four-story wings of the residence halls, which require more work, will be built first. Afterward, the main building will be constructed.

“The schedule says we will have the buildings closed up by Thanksgiving so they can work on the inside during the winter,” he said.

The entire building is expected to be completely furnished and staffed to open next July. Other amenities touted on the college’s groundbreaking handout include a laundry room on each wing, study lounges, vending machines, wireless Internet access and 24-hour security.

“You have to work around the weather, but the building should be ready by then,” Mr. Donato said. “We’re very excited. It’s a tremendous opportunity for the college, for the students.”
