Pioneers edge Rams in 14th inning

Not even the rain or the Watertown Rams were going to stop the Elmira Pioneers from taking the pivotal game one of the best-of-three Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League West Division Championship Series.

Colby Gee supplied an RBI single in the 14th inning off of Cody Culp to help Elmira win game one 7-6 to get a 1-0 lead over Watertown in the longest playoff game in PGCBL history. Gee said that it was huge to get a win in the first game in the series.

“It was very nice,” said Gee. “We have game two in Elmira and we usually have 4.000 fans so it’s going to be very hard (for Watertown) to win.”

Parker Curry went 3-for-5 including a two-run homer in the four-run fifth and picked up the save for the Pioneers. Curry said it was like his earlier in his playing career in having to do multiple roles.

“I went back to my high school days playing shortstop, hitting and closing it out,” said Curry. “It’s fun doing a little bit of everything.

Spencer Henderson slapped three singles including an RBI single in the eleventh for the Pioneers, who played their longest game of the season on Friday. Elmira manager Matt Burch said that he was proud of how the win was a total team effort.

“We used everybody but three guys on the roster and I appreciate their effort,” Burch said.

The loss puts the Rams on the brink of elimination going into game two 7:05 tonight at Dunn Field in Elmira. Watertown manager Paul Alteri said this one stings, but the team will treat like any other loss.

“Regardless of how many innings it went, it hurt because we lost,” said Alteri. “A loss is a loss no matter how many innings. A loss never tastes good.”

Riley Smith went 4-for-6 with a two-run home run, two doubles and four runs batted in. Smith said that despite the loss the team is moving on quickly.

“The loss is already in the past.” said Smith, who hit his first home run of the year. “We got a game (today) and a great opportunity to play good baseball.”

Dominic Lopez also went for 4-for-6 with a double and an RBI-single that tied the game in 11th after Elmira took a 6-5 lead. Logan Grant pitched four scoreless innings including working out of a bases loaded and no out jam in the seventh inning and Matt Thaiss added two hits for the Rams.

The Pioneers scored first after Ryan Bashara laced an RBI single. The Rams then struck for three in the fourth after including the home run by Smith.

Elmira then erupted for a four-run inning in the fifth which was capped off by the homer by Curry.

Watertown then tied it when Smith ripped a two-run double in the sixth to tie the game at sixth before both bullpens kept the game tied at 5 before the 11th inning when Elmira took the lead on a Henderson single.

Watertown tied the game in the 11th after Lopez plated Joe Moroney with a single amidst a driving rain. The game was then delayed for about half an hour after the end of the 13th inning.
