The 10th Mountain Division is the most deployed division in the United States Army. By design and hard-won reputation, the division will remain extremely active in the coming years.
Since 1992, all platoons deploying from Fort Drum have been adopted by organizations, groups and individuals who want these soldiers and their family members to know that they appreciate their service and sacrifice. Thats more than 7,500 platoons, or more than 150,000 soldiers, who have received that important message.
Today, around 5,000 10th Mountain Division soldiers are in Afghanistan. All are
The sponsors of these adopted platoons send letters, books, magazines, videos and other things the soldiers request. Some hold holiday parties or other events for the soldiers family members.
Those of you who have served in our armed forces know the value of receiving mail and goodies, and everyone knows the value of having someone care about you when you are far away from home and your loved ones.
A conversation with a Rotarian who helped the Salvation Army fill its kettles last Christmas says it all. He told me that a guy in a wheelchair, obviously a wounded warrior, saw the word Rotarian on the apron he was wearing.
The soldier said, Hey you are the guys who adopted my platoon. He then reached into his pocket and took out a wad of bills and tossed them into the kettle. With a big smile on his face, he said, They arent here to tell you how much those packages mean to us, but I can. He then sped away singing Jingle Bells at the top of his voice. It was a more than a one-Kleenex experience.
The Adopt a 10th Mountain Platoon Program is a win–win for our soldiers, our community and our nation, but it couldnt work without your continued support. So the Northern New York-Fort Drum Chapter of the Association of the United States Army wants to again thank the many citizens of the north country who have supported our soldiers and their families in the past and continue to do so today.
