Red & Black scores road win

WATERLOO — Joe Brennan ran for 131 yards and a touchdown, Rob Hughes scored his second touchdown on an interception return this season, and the Watertown Red and Black semipro football team captured its first on-field victory Saturday night with a 21-7 nonleague triumph over the Finger Lakes Impact.

The Red and Black improved to 2-2 overall and will renew its Empire Football League rivalry with the undefeated Plattsburgh North Stars this Saturday at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds.

“We played well. It wasn’t a big turnover game and we didn’t have any penalties that would break our backs. I’m very pleased,” Red and Black coach George Ashcraft said.

Brennan ran it in from 20 yards out with 10 minutes left in the game to put Watertown up 14-7.

Hughes then came up with an interception with four minutes to play and returned it 28 yards for the touchdown to seal it, giving the Red and Black a 21-7 lead.

Hughes also finished with six tackles. Charles Noell led the defense with nine tackles and a sack.

Angel Hickman scored the Red and Black’s first touchdown on an eight-yard reverse. The score was set up by a blocked punt that positioned Watertown just inside the Impact’s ten-yard line.

Red and Black quarterback Tyler Michaelwicz completed 4 of 11 passes for 56 yards, and wide receiver Edgar Givens finished with three catches for 75 yards. The two hooked up for a 63-yard completion on Watertown’s first play of the game.

The Red and Black will host league-leading Plattsburgh (3-0) at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds.

The North Stars have scored 151 points in three games and are led by the league’s leading passer (Harry Rascoe, 727 yards) and top two receivers (Dexter Geohagan, 275 and Andrew Price, 170).

Plattsburgh beat Watertown in last year’s EFL semifinals and in the 2010 EFL championship game.
