Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has ordered that flags on state government buildings be flown at half-staff Tuesday in honor of a World War II soldier from Frankfort.

Army Sgt. Dominick Licari was last heard from in 1944, when the A-20G Havoc Bomber on which he was a gunner crashed into a mountainside in New Guinea. After numerous search efforts spanning multiple decades, Sgt. Licari’s remains were recently identified by the U.S. military and returned to New York.

“After so many years abroad, the remains of Sgt. Licari are finally coming home,” Mr. Cuomo said in a release. “I proudly join with all New Yorkers in remembering his service to our country with gratitude, and offer my thoughts and prayers to the friends and family of other service members who remain unaccounted for.”

The governor’s policy has been to lower flags to pay tribute to state service members and those stationed in New York who die in a combat zone.
