GLENFIELD — In just three years, Taking Care of Our Own has raised more than $17,000 to give to Lewis County residents who have suffered through an illness or other crisis but have been unable to find adequate assistance elsewhere.

The group held its fourth Benefit Day on July 27, raising even more funds with a variety of activities.

“All the money stays here in Lewis County,” said organization member Sharon V. Thayer.

That committee reviews submitted applications and determines how the money is distributed, said Ms. Thayer. All applications are kept confidential and seen only by five core committee members.

In the past, the group has donated gas cards to families needing to travel for chemotherapy treatments, has helped families displaced by fire, and has assisted when unemployment or injury has caused serious hardship to a family or individual.

The recent event kicked off with 5k walk and run in Glenfield. A morning blessing over motorcycles was held at 3-G Fire Hall, before the riders headed off to participate in a poker run.

An American Red Cross bloodmobile took donations throughout the day, while vendors, entertainment by Reality Check, a classic car and antique tractor show were available, as well.

The Adirondack Trailblazers conducted a baseball clinic, while kids’ characters and activities were provided by WPBS-TV.

A spaghetti dinner was held followed by a dance with music by The Burglars.

Participation in the ride was smaller than in previous years, but Ms. Thayer explained they saw an increase in many other events.

“We did fantastic on the cake walk,” she said. That particular activity was possible thanks to the many donations of cakes.

“We really do appreciate all the donations,” Ms. Thayer said. “We couldn’t do this without all of the community support.”

Organizers were pleased with the money raised, according to Ms. Thayer. “It was also really nice to see so many new faces,” she said.

County residents wishing to receive assistance can pick up an application form at the Edge Hotel, call the hotel at 348-4211 or visit the group’s website at www.lctakingcareofourown.com.
