CANTON A 2001 Ford Taurus heading north on Rt. 27 from Canton struck a Time Warner Cable utility pole Monday night when attempting to avoid a deer.
Erik L. Robinson, 34, and Shiloh Richard, 30, were heading to their Lisbon home when Mr. Robinson said he came upon the deer standing in the middle of the road at about 8:30 p.m.
I hit the brakes and tried to steer out of the way. The car skidded and just went off the road, Mr. Robinson said standing next to his white ford. The car sat in a ditch aside the northbound lane. From the looks of it, its probably totaled.
The passenger side of the windshield was smashed and as the air bags were deployed, Mr. Robinson said he wasnt certain if that was the result of the knocking out a utility pole or if his friend, Ms. Richard, hit her head.
Mr. Robinson did not require medical attention. Ms. Richard was treated for a head injury by Canton rescue and released.
Responding to the scene was Canton Fire & Rescue, Morley Fire Department, St. Lawrence County Sheriffs Office and state police.
Canton Fire Chief Robert M. Crowe said Mr. Robinson was lucky that he didnt skid a foot further as he would have had a head on collision with a culvert.
They sheered this Time Warner Pole and had they gone just a little bit further The chief makes a gesture implying the car would have been thrown into the air. We just cut the top of the pole to get the power lines out of the road.
Time Warner Cable will be replacing the pole.
