Canton village board sets public hearing on dog park

CANTON — A public hearing regarding a dog park at Canton Island Park was scheduled for Aug. 19, during a special meeting the village board held Monday afternoon.

Village trustee Mary A. Ashley said the dog area will be fenced off and will make up about 40 percent of the space in the park. She said a map of the area should be on the village website by next week.

“It starts at the beginning, and then on the side and then it goes back and opens up a little bit,” she said. “It’s kind of like a teardrop.”

Ms. Ashley said she recently toured the proposed area with the committee of residents who initiated the idea of a dog park.

“The community committee met, and they scoped out the island, and it’s good space,” she said.

Although Ms. Ashley said the committee is on board with Canton Island Park, village trustee Daniel J. McDonnell said he is expecting more opposition from community members during the Aug. 19 meeting.

“I think there are people who have a huge vision for that waterfront,” he said. “Many people have completely different visions, and I would just suspect there will be some opposition.”

The original plan, for the 20,000-square-foot dog park to be at Priest Field, generated a large amount of opposition from commmunity members on Church and Judson streets who attended a public hearing June 18. Some said that the dog area at Priest Field would take up the majority of the field that is already being used for games and sports for children.

“Priest Field got dropped because there was a lot more opposition than there was enthusiasm for it, as it turned out,” Mr. McDonnell said. “So that’s why we’re trying this space—it’s plan B.”
