A Willsboro businesswoman and former George W. Bush staffer will seek the Republican nomination to challenge Rep. William L. Owens, D-Plattsburgh in next years Congressional elections.
Elise M. Stefanik, who works in her familys business Premium Plywood Products, Inc., served in the White House from 2006-2009 on the Domestic Policy Council Staff and in the Chief of Staffs office. She also has past experience as director of debate preparation for 2012 Vice Presidential nominee Rep. Paul Ryan.
Her resume also includes time as policy director of the 2012 Republican national platform, director of communications for the Foreign Policy Initiative and as policy director on Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlentys presidential campaign.
Ms. Stefanik announced her candidacy in an email to the media Tuesday morning.
Her press release stated that she is the first member of her immediate family to graduate from college, and that she graduated with honors from Harvard University.
Before she can challenge Mr. Owens, Ms. Stefanik will have to go against Joseph M. Gilbert, St. Lawrence County emergency services director, who announced his interest for the Republican nomination on Saturday afternoon.
