Salvation Army and Neighborhood Center look for school supply donations

OGDENSBURG — The Salvation Army and Ogdensburg Neighborhood Center need donations of school supplies to help local students prepare for the fall.

“It’s just going to be the basics,” Ogdensburg Salvation Army Capt. Angela S. Shaffer said. “Whatever we get as donations is what we give out.”

Capt. Shaffer said the Salvation Army will have representatives at Walmart from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday with a list of the top 10 items students will need for school in the fall.

Those items are 1-inch binders, highlighters, multisubject notebooks, folders, glue sticks, pencil boxes, filler paper, colored pencils, crayons and rulers.

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 29, families will be able to pick up supplies at the 401 Franklin St. office.

A proof of income, expenses and a report card from the previous year to prove a child has been enrolled in school is needed to receive supplies from the Salvation Army, Capt. Shaffer said.

She said the Salvation Army was able to help 142 children stock up on school supplies last year.

Capt. Shaffer said people who want to donate to the Salvation Army can call 393-3351 or drop off supplies at the organization’s Seek N Find shop, 727 State St., or the Franklin Street main office.

The neighborhood center also will be setting up at Walmart on Aug. 21 and 28 to ask members of the public to purchase and donate school supplies.

“We will take any donations,” neighborhood center employee Nicole J. Sharpe said.

Families interested in receiving supplies from the center must have a child enrolled in school and be regular participants in the monthly U.S. Department of Agriculture’s surplus food program.

Supplies will be distributed from Aug. 26 to Sept. 13.

Ms. Sharpe said the Neighborhood Center provides more than 60 children with school supplies each year.

Anyone looking to donate should call the neighborhood center at 393-5561.
