City Council will review hiring preferences for seasonal jobs


OGDENSBURG — Hiring preferences for seasonal jobs in the city may change after this summer and, for college graduates, not necessarily for the better.

The City Council at its Sept. 9 meeting will consider amending the seasonal employees section of the city code to give Ogdensburg college students and high school students 16 and older first preference over “employees with previous satisfactory employment experience with the city of Ogdensburg.”

Parks and Recreation Director Matthew J. Curatolo, in whose department the amendment originated, said that if it is approved, it will mean that previously employed college students cannot be considered for seasonal employment after they graduate.

“We want to give more college and high school students the opportunity to work for the city,” he said. “We want to be fair to everyone.”

Two of the Parks and Recreation Department’s 40 seasonal employees are college graduates. Mr. Curatolo said there were no complaints, but it did prompt him, City Manager John M. Pinkerton and the city Recreation Commission to review the hiring preferences to consider college and high school students first.

“It’s not for people who want a job after they leave college,” Mr. Pinkerton said.

The buildings and grounds crew jobs pay the minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, with lifeguards at the Elsa M. Luksich Municipal Pool earning $7.40 an hour.

College graduates, however, won’t be completely shut out. Mr. Pinkerton said the department’s experienced summer sports program coaches can return.

The city Public Works Department has three $7.25-an-hour seasonal employees, all college students, according to Director Kit W. Smith.
