Pro hockey: Privateers, now known as Watertown, announce 2013-14 schedule

The Privateers will return to Watertown for another season in the Federal Hockey League, but its city name has been changed.

The team will be known as the Watertown Privateers after three previous seasons as Thousand Islands serving as a charter member of the FHL.

The Privateers will open their campaign at the defending league champion Danbury Whalers at 7:35 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2.

Watertown will begin the home portion of its schedule against the Danville Dashers at 7:35 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8 at the Watertown Municipal Arena.

Overall, the team will play a 56-game slate in the four-team league this season, including 26 dates on home ice, down from 60 and 30 during last season, respectively.

Previously, the Privateers played their first two seasons in the circuit in Alexandria Bay before moving to Watertown last year.

Privateers owner/general manager Nicole Kirnan wouldn’t comment, but confirmed the name change on Thursday and said the team will announce a new head coach in the coming weeks.
