Remington works from Ogdensburg loaned to Texas museum

OGDENSBURG — A collection of the works of Frederic Remington will go from the Empire State to the Lone Star State next month.

“Treasures from The Frederic Remington Art Museum,” a collection of 26 sketches and drawings by the north country artist, will be on display from Sept. 21 to Dec. 8 at the Museum of the Big Bend, Alpine, Texas.

The collection’s home base is the Frederic Remington Art Museum, 303 Washington St.

Interim Executive Director and Curator Laura A. Foster said the traveling exhibits have been going on annually since 2007; the nationwide destinations range from the New York State Historical Association in Cooperstown to museums in Florida and Wisconsin.

Wherever the exhibits go, the objective is the same — to promote the art of the Canton native, who was born in 1861 and died in 1909.

“We’re very mission-driven for Frederic Remington,” Ms. Foster said. “There’s no substitute for seeing art in person.”

The Texas exhibit came about earlier this year when a Museum of the Big Bend representative visited the Ogdensburg museum and struck a deal with Ms. Foster’s predecessor, Edward A. LaVarnway.

Past exhibiting museums, Ms. Foster said, have been enthusiastic. “I think it does very well,” she said.

The Museum of the Big Bend will pay the Remington Art Museum a $20,000 rental fee for allowing it to borrow the works for the exhibit.

In its website promoting the exhibit, the Museum of the Big Bend said Mr. Remington is “considered the most influential and important artist to portray the American West. Works from the Remington Museum rarely leave their home in Ogdensburg, New York.”
