The top five catches came from four different sites on Friday in the first day of the St. Lawrence International Junior Carp Championship.
Fishing out of a peg at Brandy Brook in Waddington, Seth Cooke landed four carp weighing 69 pounds, two ounces with a big fish of 20 pounds. Brandy Brook also produced the second place entry which was landed by Colin Peacock who posted a 66-2 entry with the best four of seven carp.
Talyne Pier, who was sponsored by River Run Fitness in Waddington, stood third catching 63-3 with the best four out five fish caught at the Customs House site in Ogdensburg. Piers bountiful catch came in her first carp fishing outing ever.
2011 Grand Champion Mike Cummings, who is a member of the Uppstroms Bait-Tackle Senior Team, weighed in 63 pounds from the best four of six fish caught at a peg at Little Sucker Brook in Waddington. Morgan Hull stood fourth at 51-3 while fishing at a site in Massena and Kate Bateman brought in a 40-3 entry while fishing at Hawkins Point in Massena where Francis Bateman caught at 38-3 entry.
Jeff Mott, another member of the Uppstroms Bait-Tackle Sr. Team, landed a 37-2 entry fishing at Sucker Brook in Waddington.
The first day leader in the race for Big Fish honors was Nicholas Burns who landed a 23-8 carp just 15 minutes before the 8 p.m. close of fishing at Lighthouse Point in Ogdensburg. Last years Grand Champion Bryaunna Murray of Massena stood second with a 22-pounder which was part of a 36-pound day harvested from a site at Hawkins Point in Massena.
Ian Hawkins caught a 21-8 carp at Wheathouse Bay in Ogdensburg and Bethany Gilbert of Hannawa Falls landed a 21-pounder at the Customs House in Ogdensburg. In the past two tournaments, Gilbert earned the Smallest Carp Award with catches of four and eight pounds.
The 122-angler field will switch sites today for the finale of the tournament which runs from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A pizza party, sponsored by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, will be held at 6 p.m. and followed by the awards ceremony at 7 p.m., all at Madrid-Waddington Central School. The public is invited to attend.
The catch-and-release tournament is hosted by the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce. Dale Vallance of Madrid, who racked up back-to-back wins in the 2009 and 2010 tournaments, is this years Grand Marshal.
