Black Lake to host Outdoor Heritage Family Rendevous

The Black Lake Fish and Game Association and Friends of the NRA are sponsoring the Outdoor Heritage Family Rendezvous at the Black Lake Clubhouse this Saturday.

Shooting activities include a sporting-clay challenge for individuals and club-sponsored teams, trap shooting throughout the day, turkey shoots with adult and youth divisions, and chicken shoots with adult and youth divisions. Additional youth events are a marshmallow gun safari, scavenger hunt through a wooded trail, fun shoots, and a casting contest.

Among the various demonstrations at the event are trapping, youth archery, and dog training by the River Valley Gun Dog Club. Goodbye Earl Barbecue will provide a pig roast while attendees are invited to bring a dish and/or a dessert to pass for judging. Too, drawings will be held for a NYS Lifetime Sportsman License and a .44 caliber Henry Big Boy bore rifle.

The Black Lake Clubhouse is located on State Route 58 between Morristown and Edwardsville. For more information, visit the Black Lake Web site at

2013 Deer Seasons

Deer hunters will note two variations from the traditional Northern Zone deer seasons and dates for this fall. For one thing, a youth firearms deer hunt will take place for a second year during Columbus Day weekend from Saturday-Monday. Too, the standard seasons runs a bit later than usual. The Early Bowhunting Season runs from Sept. 27 to Oct. 25; the Early Muzzloading Season goes from Oct. 19-25; the regular season extends from Oct. 26-Dec. 8; and the Late Muzzleloader Season runs from Dec. 1-15.

For complete regulations, pick up a copy of the 2013-14 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Guide now available at all license-issuing agents, or visit the DEC Web site at

Venison Donation

The Venison Donation Coalition is celebrating its 13th year, and during that period, sportsmen have donated 38 tons of venison annually, which translates to feeding four million individuals. In addition to facilitating the venison donations, the coalition also pays for the processing of the venison.

When individuals purchase their sporting licenses, they have the option to support the Venison Donation, so when you purchase your licenses, consider telling the clerk that you would like to also donate a dollar or more to the worthwhile cause.

L. Ontario Fisheries Coalition

The Lake Ontario Fisheries Coalition is dedicated to sustaining a healthy fishery in the Eastern Basin of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. The group meets at 1 p.m. the first Friday of each month in the Meeting Lodge at Gander Mountain in Watertown. For information on becoming a member of the group, contact secretary Joan Dowker at 755-2680.

According to the DEC’s 2012 Lake Ontario Fisheries Program Highlights, cormorants in the three St. Lawrence River colonies at Griswold, McNair, and Strachan islands consumed 13 million fish in 2012. Of that number, 73 percent were round gobies, 11 percent were yellow perch, and 9 percent were rock bass.

While it is good news that the majority of fish consumption consists of round gobies, the cormorants in those three colonies alone accounted for the consumption of 1.43 million yellow perch and 1.17 million rock bass in 2012.
