NATURAL DAM – John W. Riordan, 75, passed away Thursday, August 15, 2013 at United Helpers Maplewood Campus in Canton.
A funeral service will be held Monday, August 19th at 1:00 pm at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur with Judy Sibley, lay pastor officiating and burial in Evans Mills Cemetery. Calling hours are Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm.
John was born in Watertown on July 1, 1938, the son of William and Bessie Walts Riordan.
He graduated from Evans Mills High School in 1955 and from the New York State Police Academy in Albany.
John married Janice Louise Waite on October 4, 1958 in Evans Mills with Rev. George Pillbeam officiating.
John worked for the New York State Police for 25 years, retiring in 1989. Before joining the State Police, he worked for the St. Regis Paper Company and at the Borden milk plant. After retiring, John worked at Dave Hampton Chrysler and served as a town justice for Gouverneur for 18 years.
He enjoyed reading, hunting, and participating in Civil War reenactments. John also enjoyed caning and refinishing furniture, collecting antiques, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a member of the Gouverneur Elks Lodge.
John is survived by his wife Janice, a son Larry and Amber Riordan of Heuvelton, a daughter Penny and Faron Parent of Gouverneur, 5 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents.
