Page didn’t adequately portray artworks

What a disappointing “Mini Page” in the Aug. 12 Watertown Daily Times on a “World Fullof Art”!

That much stuff is a month’s worth of daily art classes for kindergarten through 12th grade, all on one page! What kid will read all this and follow any of your “lessons”?

The illustrations are worthless for them because they are so tiny, complex and gray, especially when your captions tout the virtues of colors!

For example: A gray postagestamp-size approximation of 72 inchesby 120 inches of Albert Bierstadt’s “Among the Sierra Nevada, California” is no invitation to answer “How does Bierstadt use color, texture, space, form and line?” — or to visit the Smithsonian Art Museum.

Instead, invite them and their grandparents directly to that painting by replacing the teency-weency and partly redundant caption on the right of your postage stamp by a straight invitation to for an exhaustive and useful info plus a good-size color reproduction! Ditto for the other artworks, please.

Then there is some wrong vocabulary in these “instructions”:

In “Shapes,” the term “slanting horizon” is an oxymoron used for sky line!

“Things that are small seem farther away than things that are big.” Are you talking of mice vs elephants? Or only elephants? That last sentence in “Tricks of the artist” should have said something like “Things far away should be drawn smaller than when they are nearby.”

And “Sculptures are all 3-D”? How about painted sculptures?

You might better say “All sculptures are 3-D.”

“It is easy to see three dimensions in sculptures ...”

I wonder how many kids will admire you for that bit of wisdom.
