USDA forecasts record-breaking corn production in 2013

U.S. corn growers are predicted to harvest a record of 13.8 billion corn bushels in 2013, according to a monthly crop production report announced last week by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. That estimated figure is an increase of 28 percent compared to the drought-stricken 2012 season.

The early planting season in April was unfavorable for corn growers this year due to wet and cold spring weather, according to a NASS news release. But by mid-May, improved weather enabled producers to greatly speed up their planting pace. The previous single-week planting record was broken, as 43 percent of the total corn crop was planted during the week ending May 19. U.S. growers finished planting by mid-June, with 97.4 million corn acres planted.

Based on weather conditions, NASS predicts this year’s corn yield will be about 154.4 bushels per acre, the third-highest yield on record. The report, which includes data for other crops, is available at
