COLTON – From logging on the Racquette River, to flash-backs of the Colton Union School, all of this and more of Colton’s past is now available on-line.

More than 1,000 postcards and photographs from the Colton Historical Society have been scanned by the Northern New York Library Network, Potsdam. The images and corresponding data may be viewed by the public and researchers alike on the New York Heritage site at www.nyheritage.org. Click on Collections and then on “Colton Historical Society” to access the entire compilation.

“The project will connect our historical society with those interested in the history of Colton via the Internet,” Colton Historical Society Director Dennis Eickhoff noted. “Many of the photos haven’t been seen by the public in years.

“By having this collection available, it cuts down on the handling of original photos and makes it easier for researchers, or just someone interested in our history, to have access, since the museum is not open year-round,” he added.

Images of Colton include categories such as buildings, churches, hydro, library, logging/lumbering, people, residences, school and the Racquette River.

New York Heritage is a research portal for students, educators, historians, genealogists and anyone else who is interested in learning more about the people, places and institutions of New York State. The site provides free access to more than 170 distinct digital collections, totaling hundreds of thousands of items.
