Union not happy with layoffs

OGDENSBURG -The union representing 11 to-be-laid-off Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center employees isn’t happy with the hospital’s decision to cut the jobs even though the workers have been offered jobs by Massachusetts firm to which they were outsourced.

Burlington-based Nuance will take on 11 transcriptionist positions to be cut by the medical center. Hospital spokeswoman Laura C. Shea said the job entails transferring patient information from the doctor to patient’s files.

Ms. Shea said the change is a “trade-off” of less cost for the hospital for improved quality of service and quicker turnaround time for transcriptions.

Employees who take the job offers from Nuance can work from home.

Lawrence M. Tombolillo, hospital delegate for Local 1199, Service Employees International Union, isn’t pleased.

“We’re not happy about it,” he said Wednesday. “It’s a layoff.”
