Oral rabies bait will be distributed across Jefferson County, beginning this week, to vaccinate raccoons and help stop the spread of the disease, according to a recent news release from Jefferson County Public Health Service.

Beginning this week, the Wildlife Services program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture will conduct aerial baiting with low-flying aircraft and next week its staff will begin baiting by hand.

According to the release, baits consist of a plastic sachet, which contains the vaccine, which is covered with a fish-meal polymer that helps attract animals.

For more information about rabies, people may visit the Public Health Service website, www.jcphs.org.
