Aerial footage of St. Lawrence-Thousand Island reaches the web


HAMMOND – While the final cut has not yet been released, residents can catch a preview of a video that will be used to promote the St. Lawrence-Thousand Island region on the Internet.

A 3 1/2 minute teaser video on the video sharing website YouTube features candid portraits into summer life on the St. Lawrence River.

In Hammond, Singer Castle, Chippewa Bay and Crossover Island Lighthouse are just a few sights captured on film.

But the video is not without its criticisms. Three camerica shots featured in the preliminary video depict commercial wind turbines, drawing fire from anti-wind supporters.

“If British Petroleum and Iberdrola have their way, this view will contain over three hundred, five hundred foot turbines that will become the major feature of this awesome place [sic],” Richard Wiley Sr. commented on the website.

One viewer suggested the video’s producers had aligned themselves with commercial wind corporations.

But Town Supervisor Ronald W. Bertram says that the videos are meant solely to promote the area, and are not in the interest of promoting any particular group — be they for or against commercial wind development. The video, Mr. Bertram said, will be used to help the region as a Scenic Area of Statewide Significance designation, opening the doors to state grant funding to spur economic development.

“SASS may provide resources to perhaps suggest what type of development would suit a particular area,” Mr. Bertram said. “But this designation doesn’t impose any additional regulations unless the town wishes to do so. It’s up to the town to set those kinds of regulations.”

The production took about four days to shoot and cost Hammond over $5,000. Funding for the DVDs will come from the town’s general fund.

While the final video, produced by a Thousand Island Reflections and the McLellan Group, was due in mid-August, Mr. Bertram says its production has been delayed.

Mr. Bertram said when he receives the final cut, the footage should be about two to three hours in total.

“This was a very professionally done,” he said. “Our economic development group will look over the footage before certain images are sent to our SASS consultant for our application portfolio.”
