CANTON — The Development Authority of the North Country will be the recipient of a $250,000 award from Empire State Development to further its installation of broadband projects in underserved parts of the region.

As part of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s Regional Economic Development initiative, DANC will receive the funding toward its design and installation of six miles of internet fiber cable in Canton and the village of Rensselaer Falls. The project was initiated to provide telecommunication diversity to the Canton Corning plant but will also generally expand broadband connectivity.

“The main purpose was to get service to Corning,” said David M. Wolf, DANC telecommunication division manager. “As long as we were going up to Corning, we thought we’d continue up to Rensselaer Falls.”

Corning is served by Verizon but wanted a backup as assurance it could communicate with its headquarters and exchange data, Mr. Wolf said.

The fiber line will connect in Rensselaer Falls to a system operated by Slic Network Connections.

Slic may provide the last mile service to residents in the area who live along the DANC line, Slic President and General Manager Phillip J. Wagschal said.

Most the work to install the line has already been completed, Mr. Wolf said.
