Pit crew training planned as zucchini race date nears in Massena

MASSENA - Are you wondering how to build a Zucchini Race Car or what a Zucchini Race Car is? Then make sure to attend the Build-A-Zucchini-Racer Workshop being hosted by the Massena Nature Center. This workshop will be held from 3- 4:30 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Massena Public Library and is to help prepare for the first Massena Zucchini Car Races being held Sept. 7 at the sixth annual Harvest Festival.

If you are not able to make the workshop, the rules are simple: Race car must be made of a real zucchini; zucchini can be any size; wheels must be attached to the zucchini (no skate boards or roller skates); zucchini must be self propelled (no motor cars or remote controls); wheels can be made out of anything (wood, metal, plastic wheels from an old toy car); decorate the zucchini any way you want and, most importantly, have fun.

There will be a race track set up at the Harvest Festival and races will begin at approximately noon. To register your zucchini car, bring your car to the Massena Chamber Booth before noon and you will be assigned an age classification and given your race time. Age groups will be: 5 and under / 6 – 9 / 10 and up. Trophies will be given in the following categories in each age group: Fastest, Slowest, Most Creative and Scariest.

For a copy of the rules visit the Massena Chamber website (

If you are interested in helping with the Zucchini Car Race or volunteering to help at the Harvest Festival, please contact the chamber office (769-3525).

The Harvest Festival is held Downtown Massena from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. and is an admission free event.

This event is presented by the Greater Massena Chamber of Commerce with sponsorship from Alcoa, First Niagara Bank, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, North Country Savings Bank, Pease and Gustafson, SeaComm Federal Credit Union, Studio 162…A Full Service Salon and Spa, and Whalen, Davey & Looney making it possible.
