Massena Central participating in dental sealant program

MASSENA - Children in grades two and three in the Massena Central School District will be entitled to a free dental screening now that the district’s board of education has approved participating in a dental sealant program offered by the Community Health Center of the North Country, Canton.

The organization is required, however, to bill private dental insurance and Medicaid if sealants are applied. But, they said in a letter to Massena Central School officials, there is no charge for the sealants if the child does not have dental insurance or Medicaid.

“Even if dental insurance or Medicaid is billed there will not be a charge, co-pay, or balance due for this service,” they wrote.

The effort is part of a tooth decay prevention program targeted to second- and third-grade students. The program involves the application of a dental sealant material to the child’s teeth and follow-up evaluation.

Children will be screened without x-rays to determine if they would benefit from the program. The child’s teeth will be cleaned, conditioned and sealants will be applied if it’s found that sealants would help the child’s teeth.

“It requires children to receive additional cleaning and follow-up,” Interim Superintendent William W. Crist told school board members.

Participation in the program is voluntary, and children may be withdrawn at any time, according to the letter.

Parents who want their child to receive the service must complete a “Medical and Consent Form” and “Billing Information Form.” Once the forms are completed, they are returned to the child’s teacher.

Officials with the Community Health Center of the North Country said they would like to send the forms home with students on Sept. 5, the first day of school.
