Moose herded out of village of Lowville

LOWVILLE — Village police responded to a moose in the vicinity at Park Avenue and Trinity Avenue at 6:27 a.m. Thursday.

The mature male was herded by village officers assisted by Lewis County sheriff’s deputies and state police. The animal crossed State Street and entered Veterans’ Memorial Park on Parkway Drive. It next traveled through yards of private residences, including those on Clinton Street. The moose continued in a west-northwest direction, according to Village Police Chief Eric F. Fredenburg. He advised village residents to stay away from the moose if it returns and to call police.

State Department of Environmental Conservation spokesman Stephen W. Litwhiler agreed, saying, ”People should give it a wide berth. It can get really stressed out when it is hot like this, if pursued.”

“It’s been described as a small bull,” he said. “It’s not yet mating season. He was probably just wandering looking for food.”
