OFA Wins Cring Tourney

OFA outshot Lisbon 17-6 in Saturday night’s championship game of the Gerard Cring Memorial Boys Soccer Tournament but both teams created scoring chances off well-conceived buildups.

But the lone goal of the game came with startling suddenness with 8:52 remaining in regulation. OFA’s Dillon “Rudy” Binion took a backpass from Nate Peo and bent a 30-yard shot off the front of his foot which nestled just inside the right goalpost and just out of the reach of Lisbon keeper Issac Sovie.

“I really wished we would have finished one of our chances earlier but Lisbon played very well and did a good job stopping a lot of our attacks. Rudy Binion took just a great shot,” said OFA Coach Matt Morley after goaltender Jacob Sias stopped six shots for his second shutout of the tournament and Sovie made a series of acrobatic stops in a 16-save effort.

“Selecting all-tournament picks was tough because so many guys did a lot of good things,” said Coach Morley after honoring Nate Peo as the Most Valuable Player and citing Binion with one of the All-Mattison Team awards named in honor of OFA’s first soccer coach George Mattison.

“Nate Peo set up the only goal tonight and had a three goals on Friday. Peyton Lalone and Conor Hannan had some excellent crosses and Seth Pinkerton’s throw-ins were very dangerous. And Seth, Dave Prudhomme, DaKota Brady and Aaron Peo played much better in the back than they did on Friday.”

Lisbon Coach Bill Reed said it was a tough loss but one that he feels will help the Golden Knights get to where they want to be.

“OFA is very talented, skilled and very quick but we hung in there and we had some chances. Conor Hannan was outstanding for them and Adam Kelley played very well for us all over the field,” said Reed who honored Kelley with an All-Mattison Team award.

“But we were able to play 21 guys tonight because I wanted them all to feel what it was like to be a part of a game like this. I am very happy with the team but we all know that we have a lot of work to do.”

In the consolation game of the Gerald Cring Memorial Tournament, Norwood-Norfolk won a 2-0 decision over Gouverneur.

N-N 2, Gouverneur 0: Zeb Brown connected in the 36th minute from Matt Berger for the game winning goal for N-N (1-1). Ian St. Andrews converted from All-Mattison Team selection Colby Munson in the 72nd minute for insurance.

Garrett Waite made eight saves in the shutout for Norwood-Norfolk and All Mattison Tournament selection Seth Carr turned aside nine shots for Gouverneur.

Canton 2, Plattsburgh 0: Josh Huiatt figured in both goals for the Bears in the consolation game of the Chazy Tournament. Huaitt set up the first goal from Jake Facey in the 15th minute and scored unassisted in the 67th. Scott Wight had 14 saves posting the shutout.

“We scored in both halves and our defense played well,” said Canton Coach Matt Caufield.

Seton Catholic 6, Salmon River 0: Salmon River fell in the championship game of the Saranac Central tournament. Zach Smith had 12 saves for Salmon River. No further details were available.

Malone 2, NEC 1: Abagail Collins generated both goals for the Huskies after Katie Sample scored from NEC in the 12th minute. Abgail Collins tied the game on a penalty kick in the 21st and earned the game winner from Gabrielle Collins to back Jamie Lavoie in goal.
