Numbers game key for Lowville

The good news for Lowville head coach Josh Coffman is that he returns almost all of his skill players from last year’s team that finished strong and eventually lost to Herkimer in the Section 3 Class C-2 final.

The bad news is with only 23 players on the varsity roster, most of those kids will be going both ways as well as playing a lot of special teams.

“If we can stay healthy, we’ll be pretty good,” Coffman said. “I like our speed and athleticism. We have some size, but not a lot, so we’ll have to rely on execution and consistency. Our depth will have to come from interchangeable parts.”

Coffman possesses a dynamic two-way athlete in Kyle Malik, who scored nine touchdowns in a variety of ways last year. He will be utilized as a running back and a wide receiver, and is a superb kick returner.

Returning quarterback Isaac Widrick showed great maturity at the end of last season, and should be even better this year. He has a couple of other capable targets in Dalton Rombough and Cameron Malik, and will also get some production from speedy tailback Billy Larkins.

Seniors Dylan Babcock and Dan Austin lead a solid line.

Look for the Red Raiders to challenge perennial power General Brown and Immaculate Heart Central for the Class C North title.

Lowville begins at home agaisnt Altmar-Parish-williamstown at 7 p.m. Friday.
