Local colleges: Golden Knights runners dominate home course

POTSDAM — Runners from Clarkson University dominated the North Country Invitational cross country races held on the Clarkson campus Wednesday.

Clarkson’s men finished in spots 1-12, led by winner Ryan Recchia, who finished the 5-kilometer course in 16 minutes, 27 seconds.

Daniel Fritz finished second for Clarkson and Phillip Spinosa was third.

Clarkson’s women also claimed the top three spots in the non-scoring event. Catherine Zarnofsky won the race in 21:03, but teammates Erin Corring and Fiona Recchia each recorded the same time.

SUNY Canton’s Megan Mydosh was fourth six seconds behind.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

CLARKSON 1, SUNY POTSDAM 0

Megan Strijek scored off a pass from Hailey Hider in the 80th minute to lead Clarkson (2-1) past village-rival SUNY Potsdam in a nonconference game at SUNY Potsdam.

Kim Keline made three saves to shut out the Bears (1-2).

SUNY CANTON 3,

GREEN MOUNTAIN 0

Brittany Rotach made two saves to record the shutout as SUNY Canton defeated Green Mountain College (0-3) in a nonconference game in Poultney, Vt.

Franchesca Trombley, Karyss Terrance and Melissa Campoverde scored goals for the Kangaroos.

SUNY Canton improved to 3-0 overall.

MEN’S SOCCER

SUNY POTSDAM 3,

JOHNSON STATE 1

Alessio Vitale scored two goals and assisted on another as the Bears (2-1) defeated Johnson State in a nonconference game in Johnston, Vt.

Tom Benedetto also scored for the Bears. Eduardo Figueroa assisted on both of Vitale’s goals.

Keegan Hanlon scored for Johnson State (0-3).

VOLLEYBALL

CLARKSON 3, SUNY POTSDAM 0

Lani Durio led the Golden Knights with 38 assists in a 25-10, 25-11, 25-20 win over host SUNY Potsdam (2-3) in a nonconference match.

Erika Chin provided 19 digs and four aces for the Golden Knights (3-2).
