St. Lawrence University begins drilling wells for heating and cooling

CANTON — Workers have begun drilling 450-foot geothermal wells for St. Lawrence University’s new residence hall to provide eco-friendly heating and cooling to the building.

The 24 wells will heat the building in the winter and cool it in the summer from fluid pumped through the system.

The soil temperature deep underground does not change with the seasons. Water from the wells is pumped through pipes in the building. In the summer, the water will be cooled by the ground and in turn cool the building. During the winter, water that has absorbed the ground’s heat will provide warmth.

It is estimated that this will save 65 tons of carbon that would have been used with traditional heating and air conditioning.

The residence hall is slated for completion in fall 2014.
