A transformer fire atop a National Grid pole on Route 68 south of the city of Ogdensburg left 1,300 of the utility’s customers without power Friday from 8:50 to 9:10 a.m.

“The cause of the outage was due to a transformer failure that impacted customers in the southern half of Ogdensburg, routes 68 and 37,” said National Gridspokesperson Virginia Limmiatis.

Ogdensburg and Heuvelton firefighters responded to the scene to find that a National Grid crew had it under control.

Ms. Limmiatis couldn’t confirm reports that a bird flying into the transformer caused the outage.

The outage reached the village of Heuvelton as well as Ogdensburg Free Academy.
