Adams - Phyllis C. West, of East Church Street, died Friday afternoon at the SUNY Health Science Center in Syracuse following injuries she received in a vehicle accident in Watertown. There will be a graveside service Friday, September 13, in the Elmwood Cemetery, Adams, with Rev. John Throop, pastor of the Adams Emmanuel Episcopal Church, officiating. Calling hours will be 4:00-7:00 pm Thursday, at the Piddock Funeral Home, Adams.
Born January 1, 1932 in the town of Ellisburg, daughter of Ward and Margery Simms Clark, she attended school in Ellisburg. Due to the loss of her mother when she was an infant, and later the loss her grandmother, Phyllis had to go to work when she was 17 years old. Later in life, she devoted a great deal of time caregiving her in-laws, her grandmother and her great uncle.
She married Charles E. West of Adams on September 12, 1951 at Saint Cecilias Church, Adams, with Rev. Walter Cleary officiating. The couple lived in Adams all their married life. Mr. West, a former Niagara Mohawk lineman, died January 27, 1997.
Phyllis is survived by two sons, Richard E. and companion, Judy Heller-Howe, Adams, Barry C. and wife Julie, Henderson Harbor; five grandchildren, Jamie (Justin) McGiver, Ryan (Leann) West, Robert (companion Amity) West, Lucas (Andrea) West, Tyler (Sheena) West; six great grandchildren, Dakota, Liam, Haley, Alex, Louis, Charles West, two brothers, Earl Clark, Watertown, Kenneth Clark, Florida; one sister, Pauline Sidmore, Belleville, and several nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by one sister, Doreen Bettinger.
Phyllis was a member of the Adams Emmanuel Episcopal Church, board member of the Elmwood Cemetery Association, South Jefferson Historical Association, former member of the Stone Mills Agricultural Museum and Red Hat Society.
She enjoyed antiques, gardening and was a wonderful cook.
