CANTON — St. Lawrence County legislators approved a plan Monday to have a trained group made up of volunteers and paid personnel to deal with hazardous materials incidents.

The county will pay the city of Ogdensburg an annual fee of $17,500 for services of its team, which is mostly paid employees of the municipality.

The county also will provide Occupational Safety and Health Administration training, which is free, to volunteers. “I think this is a nice compromise,” County Administrator Karen M. St. Hilaire said. “This is kind of a hybrid. We support Ogdensburg having a paid team.”

The county will try the arrangement on a one-year trial basis.

“The point is we need a group to respond as soon as possible,” said Legislator Vernon D. “Sam” Burns, D-Ogdensburg. “This addresses that.”
