Police identify Saturday’s shooting victim

The man shot early Saturday on State Street has been identified as Jason L. Heard, 29.

He was treated at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse and released later the same day, city police said.

Police continue to investigate the incident and track down leads, Detective Sgt. Joseph R. Donoghue said. Mr. Heard was walking between High and William streets when he was shot, Detective Donoghue said.

Police reinterviewed the victim Sunday after he was released from the hospital, but few other details have emerged about what happened. Detective Donoghue said police do not have a motive. He also would not say where the victim had been earlier in the night.

Mr. Heard reportedly walked up to a bouncer at Seth’s pub complaining of a gunshot wound, and 911 was called.

He was treated on the scene by an off-duty soldier, who helped to stop the bleeding, according to a witness.

Police are asking anyone who has information about the incident or was in the area at the time to call city police at 782-2233.
