Potsdam Man pleads guilty to reduced rape charge

CANTON — The Potsdam man charged with multiple rape charges in connection with a 2011 case involving a teenage girl pleaded guilty to reduced charges in St. Lawrence County Court on Wednesday.

Gregory E. Brown Jr., 27, of 509 Raquette Road, had been facing a maximum of 95 years in prison on the six counts that had be brought against him by a St. Lawrence County grand jury on March 7.

Brown had been accused of first-degree rape, third-degree rape, first-degree criminal sexual act, first-degree criminal use of a firearm, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property. Brown allegedly had sexual contact with the girl, then 15, from August to October 2011. According to the indictment, those encounters included “forcible compulsion” during which he displayed a gun.

He was arrested by Potsdam police in December 2011.

In court on Wednesday, accepted a deal struck between St. Lawrence County Public Defender Stephen D. Button and Assistant District Attorney Viacheslav Mareyev, where Brown pleaded to the class E felony of third-degree rape and the class C violent felony second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

The plea agreement would satisfy all charges Brown was facing including any known or pending drug-related charges.

A commitment was made by St. Lawrence County Judge Jerome J. Richards that upon sentencing, Brown would be looking at a total of nine years in prison, determinate, on both charges, to be served consecutively.

Additionally, he would be looking at restitution that would pay for his extradition from North Dakota after he absconded in March.

Sentencing has been scheduled for Oct. 21.
